A LEGACY OF MATTHEW MARKHAM KILLEN
Matthew Markham Killen was born February 23, 1987. From the moment he was born, his contagious smile and genuine spirit made the world a better place.
Matt knew he wanted to make a change in the world from an early age. After participating in a high school internship shadowing Dr. James Andrews, a prominent Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Physician, Matt immediately knew his lifelong dream was to become a Doctor and help those less fortunate.
Matt always raised the bar high for himself: He attended The University of Alabama where he decided to study and graduate as a Chemical Engineer, he was a founding brother of the first multi-cultural fraternity at UA, and he was determined to excel in Medical School.
Above all else, Matt was a selfless, kind human with an innate ability to connect to others. His knack for making anyone smile and laugh is one of the qualities he is best remembered for. He did not know a stranger – he made every single person he came in contact with his friend. Matt had a strong foundation to be successful in his career and life.
Right before his passing in 2012, Matt had just taken the MCAT Exam and was awaiting the results to enter medical school. However, at 25 years old Matt was robbed of his life. All the dreams and aspirations he had to make the world a better place were suddenly seized into a world of non-existence.
With the support of Matt’s family and friends, the Matthew Markham Killen Memorial Fund was created to continue Matt’s legacy. Since 2013, a yearly scholarship has been setup to award one deserving high school student with $2,000 to aid in their college expenses. It is with great honor that the Matthew Markham Killen Memorial Fund can help someone else take one step closer to achieving their dreams. By helping a graduating student, we can also continue to honor Matt’s memory.
The Board members of the Matthew Markham Killen Memorial Fund would like to express our deepest gratitude for all of the love and support we continue to receive over the years.
